Retold | Part 6

Jesus Visits Zacchaeus

(Luke 19:1 – 10) He entered Jericho and was passing through. There was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because of the crowd, since he was a short man. So running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus, since he was about to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to

him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down because today it is necessary for me to stay at your house.”

So he quickly came down and welcomed him joyfully. All who saw it began to complain, “He’s gone to stay with a sinful man.” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, I’ll give half of my

possessions to the poor, Lord. And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I’ll pay back four times as much.”

“Today salvation has come to this house,” Jesus told him, “because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”

4 Truths for Transformation

1. Jesus knows who you are and where you are.

(Luke 19:4 – 5) So running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus, since He was about to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down because today it is necessary for me to stay at your house.”

(Isaiah 43:1) Now this is what the LORD says, - the one who created you, Jacob, and the one who formed you, Israel - “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine.

2. If Jesus did not come and stay with sinful people, then none of us

would be saved.

(Luke 19:7) All who saw it began to complain, “He’s gone to stay with a sinful man.”

(John 14:6) Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

(Acts 4:12) There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”

3. We cannot earn the grace of Jesus, but we can respond to it.

(Luke 19:8) But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, I’ll give half of my possessions to the poor, Lord. And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I’ll pay back four times as much.

(Ephesians 2:8 – 10) For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift – not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.

4. The mission of Jesus should be the mission of all those who

believe.

(Luke 19:10) For the Son of Man has come to seek and save the lost.

(Luke 6:35 – 36) But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High. For he is gracious to the ungrateful and evil. Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

(Mark 16:15) Then He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
