7 Words for the Church Today pt. 3
(Revelation 2:12 – 17)
And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write:
The One who has the sharp two-edged sword says this:
I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is; and you hold fast My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching
Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit acts of immorality. So you also have some who in the same way hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Therefore repent; or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.
Words for the Church Then and Now . . .
1. Jesus reveals Himself to us in exactly the way that we need Him to be revealed.
(Revelation 2:12 – 13) And to the angel of the church of Pergamum write: the One who has the sharp two-edged sword says this: I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is . . .
(Revelation 1:16) . . . out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword . . .
(Hebrews 4:12) For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
2. We are to stand firm on the word of God and in our faith in Jesus, even in the midst of persecution and death.
(Revelation 2:13) . . . you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. (Matthew 10:22) You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who
has endured to the end who will be saved.
3. Beware of compromising the call to holiness.
(Revelation 2:14 – 15) But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit acts of immorality. So you also have some who in the same way hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. (2 Corinthians 5:17) Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
(Luke 9:23 CSB) If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.
4. Those who repent are given a new identity, the provision of His
presence and the promise of eternal life.
(Revelation 2:16 – 17) Therefore repent; or else I am coming to you quickly, and I
