Convictions | Part 1

The Word of God: A Firm Foundation

(Matthew 7:24 – 27) Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who build his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.

What is the Bible?

1. The Bible is authoritative.
(2 Timothy 3:16 – 17) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

(2 Peter 1:20 – 21) Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

(Matthew 5:17 – 18) Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

2. The Bible is inspired.

(John 17:17) Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

3. The Bible is true.
(2 Sam. 7:28 CSB) Lord, GOD, you are God; your words are true . . .

(Titus 1:2) in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie . . .

(Hebrews 6:17 - 18 CSB) Because God wanted to show his unchangeable purpose even more clearly to the heirs of the promise, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us.

4. The Bible is dependable.
(Psalm 12:6 ESV) The words of the LORD are pure words

(Proverbs 30:5 ESV) Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

(Numbers 23:19) God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind.

(Isaiah 40:8 ESV) The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.

Why Do We Need the Bible?
1. The Bible teaches us.
2. The Bible corrects us.
3. The Bible trains us.

What Can We Do with the Bible?
1. Read it.
2. Study it.
3. Obey it.

All scripture is from the NIV unless otherwise noted.
